This is the ultimate tune-up if you're looking to sharpen your skills right before the main event. This workshop is ideal for any student rated 600 to 1700 USCF (or over 1000 on ChessKid!) who want to get better at chess with award-winning Magnus Academy coaches. Sessions will be divided by skill levels. Many Magnus Academy students have gone on to top 10 finishes at national events.

These small group sessions are limited to 6-8 kids per coach to allow for maximum learning. We group students with similar skill levels together. You can choose from two time slots (9:30 am–12 pm EST or 12:30–3 pm EST) to fit your schedule and skill level.

Coach Uthra started playing chess at a summer chess camp at the age of 6. She fell in love with the game and went on to earn the WFM title and won a gold medal at the Asian U-17 games. She has a peak FIDE rating of 2114 and has been coaching kids for more than 4 years. She holds a BA in Engineering and an MBA. Uthra lives with her husband and two children in Charlotte, NC.
Coach Adarsh is a FIDE Master (FIDE 2361) and has been playing chess since the age of 7. Adarsh is a commerce student and has won multiple International/National/State achievements which include a Commonwealth Silver Medal in U12 (2017). Adarsh is actively pursuing his ambition of getting an International Master title while simultaneously fulfilling his passion for nurturing and training young talents in chess by working with MCA.
Coach Alexander (USCF: 1650) Since 2016, Alexander has been working at Nottoway Middle School as a 7th-grade US History teacher. He was recently awarded recognition as Teacher of the Year for the middle school during the 2020-2021 school year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Alexander has also been invited to teach chess at the Longwood University Talented and Gifted Summer Camps for two years in the running.
Coach Luke (USCF 1894) was taught how to play chess when he was six years old. Learning about pins and forks from an Australian neighbor created an enduring fascination for the game. Luke started playing in tournaments after immigrating to the USA in 1996 and joined what was then Silver Knights after seeing how much his daughter enjoyed the after-school programs and tournament training clubs.
